Celebrating Christmas on a Budget

It’s perhaps really the most wonderful time of the year, but for many it may also be the most expensive time. Christmas has become synonymous with overindulgence, excess spending, gift giving, rising bills and perhaps with many of the themes that lace The Great Gatsby’s ostentatious parties. But here’s a bit of good news, there are some steps you can take to ease the financial burden of the season and still enjoy the Christmas period. We went ahead and prepared a Christmas on a budget list that’s sure to allow you to experience a frugal yet fantastic festive season.

Put a cap on it: Set some spending limits, especially when it comes to gift giving. Think about how much you really have to give, the spendings for your essentials, and how much you should save for the season. You can also get creative with some handmade gifts…besides, shouldn’t it be the thought that counts?

Do-It-Yourself: DIY crafts are a BIG cost-effective way to spruce up your Christmas décor. Even if you feel as though your natural inclination doesn’t display even a bit of creativity, there are a plethora of social media platforms designed to help close that gap. Search for some ideas like using real plants or recycled items to make your Christmas wreaths or garlands.

Charitable Christmas? Maybe this year instead of gift giving and buying, you can ask your family and friends to contribute some items to donate to a charity or to those in need. And, if you’re not sure how to find groups that are in need, you can always reach out to the VM Foundation for some options. This can be a truly heart-warming experience.

What do you bring to the table? You don’t have to rule out the idea of a potluck if you’re hosting this year’s Christmas dinner. If you’re having family and friends come over, ask them to bring something to the table and contribute to the meal offerings for the day. This is an easy way to save some dollars.

You can easily celebrate the Christmas season on a budget whether you choose to make your own gifts, split some costs, or create your own decorations.
